![]() What is Kyudo? For those unfamiliar with kyudo, it is the term for one of the Japanese disciplines that has its historical origins in the martial traditions of Japan. Through the act of using the Japanese bow, it is seen as a way to explore the moral and aesthetic experience that cultivates the person. In this way it is much more than simply a form of archery. As an opportunity for recreation and competition, like any sport, it develops the physical and mental awareness of the practitioner. The relationship between the physical action and the feeling level makes this a very personal experience, not unlike a form of meditation. This contemplative and holistic approach, which is familiar to the cultures of the Far East is also becoming part of our western culture. Yoga and Taichi were until recently just esoteric Asian practices which are now enjoyed by many as a recreational activity. Judo and karate had their origins in Japan and are now practiced as Olympic sports. more information: http://kyudo.org.uk/kyudointro.html |
